  • Peter was educated in the Askov high school in preparation for the seminary. Rev. Vig began his career as a private tutor in Denmark. He immigrated to the United States in 1879 where he worked and attended school in Chicago, Illinois. He returned to Denmark in 1882 where he was an educator at the Missionary Institute in Copenhagen. In 1884, he once again came to America, this time to Elk Horn, Iowa where he was an instructor at the Danish High School. During the years of 1884 to 1885, he was a pastor at Jacksonville, Iowa, after which he moved to West Denmark, Wisconsin where he was the professor of a theological seminary, and a pastor in Luck, Polk County, Wisconsin where he stayed until 1893. Once again he was back in Elk Horn, Iowa as a professor of theological studies from 1894 to 1896 until leaving for Blair, Nebraska.

The Danish United Synod, which was organized in 1896 and located in Blair, Nebraska, called upon Rev. Vig to be the president at Trinity Seminary, its theological institution in 1897. This was the fore-runner to the present-day Dana College. At that time there were four professors and eleven students. Outside the office of the President of Dana College, is a Pioneer Memorial that reads: “This building is named Pioneer Memorial in memory of A.M. Andersen, Kr. Anker, C.X. Hansen, P.S. Vig, G.B. Christiansen, and many other faithful men and women who contributed to the development and influence of Dana College and Trinity Seminary.”

In 1899, it was back to Elk Horn, IA, but he didn’t stay long, returning to Blair, NE in 1902. In July 1905, it was back to Luck, WI until 1909, then back to Blair and the Trinity Seminary where he stayed until his death.

The Rev. Vig authored the books, Danske I Kamp i og for Amerika (Omaha, Nebraska, 1917) and Danes in America: Danish–American Lutheranism from 1860 to 1908. co-authored by Peder Kjølhede and Ivar Marius Hansen.
