Barns of Nebraska’s Ethnic Communities is a traveling exhibit that pays tribute to the history of barns in Nebraska’s ethnic communities. The exhibit was funded in part by the Nebraska Humanities Council and accompanied the Smithsonian Institution’s Barn Again! Celebrating an American Icon exhibit as it spent more than a year traveling across the state of Nebraska.

The exhibit includes photographs with text in a table-top format, brochures and a 1:48 scale model cut-away of a working barn that is a replica of a barn built in Washington County in the mid-1920s. The barn is so detailed that it has tiny electric lights, people and hay bales.

The exhibit is available at no charge (with the possible exception of shipping costs) to schools, libraries, museums and private organizations. For more information, please contact the Washington County Historical Association at 402-468-5740 or info@newashcohist.org.

Description and
Content of Display

The display sits on an 8’ table which must be provided by the hosting facility. It is easily set up and taken down (instructions included).

It is an 8’ flat panel hinged display board with Velcro covering.

Flexible display prints are mounted with Velcro fasteners.

There is a cut-away barn model in an acrylic case which sits on the table in front of the flat panel display. It is constructed of wood and shows the architectural structure of a working barn c. 1925. It is so detailed that it even has working electric lights.

The header is backlit with two regular incandescent lights.

An electrical outlet is preferable for the display but is not absolutely necessary.

The table covering is black fabric that covers all four sides of the table to the floor.

The display board items fit into a shippable case 50” long x 26” wide x 12” high and weighs about 63 pounds. This case has two wheels similar to a wheeled suitcase.

The barn model fits into a shippable case 22” long x 18” wide x 20” high and weighs about 40 pounds.

Barn brochures (as many as required) and one copy of explanatory text accompany the exhibit.
