The Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail is administered by the National Park Service. These sites and segments are on the route followed by the Lewis and Clark expedition.  The National Park Service has certified the Lewis & Clark Diorama at the Washington County Museum as an official part of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail.

To qualify, the site or segment must be open to the public, interpret some part of the Lewis and Clark story, or provide the public an opportunity to retrace the Lewis and Clark Trail.

Certified, non-federal sites on the trail include state parks, private nonprofit museums, interpretive centers, American Indian museums, many hiking trails, interpretive wayside signs, interpretive kiosks, and other Lewis and Clark sites.   http://www.nps.gov/lecl/

Lewis & Clark Diorama
Washington County Museum

The National Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commemoration is being held January 2003 through September 2006.  As part of the commemoration, the Washington County Historical Association has created a diorama depicting habitat areas experienced by the Corps of Discovery in 1804 near present-day Ft. Calhoun based on entries in the journals of Lewis and Clark.

The taxidermy mounts featured in the diorama are on loan by the University of Nebraska State Museum.  Samples of vegetation mentioned in the journals were collected during the same time of the year that the Corps visited the area and were professionally freeze-dried.  The leaves and berries were then glued to the original branches and vines by local volunteers.  The diorama is recognized as a designated site on the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail by the National Park Service.
